Oxyblot

Isaak works in tandem with Jaxon Smith on the oxyblot project. The fundamental goal of the project is to enhance our understanding of the oxidative signaling involved in tardigrade cryptobioses. While our collaborative work with UNC has previously revealed an essential role of reversible cysteine thiol oxidation in cryptobiosis, there are other oxidative modifications that may arise from an increased level of ROS. The oxyblot assay allows for the quantification of the carbonylation of amino acids side chains in proteins, giving another view of how the oxidative environment in tardigrade cryptobioses affects the proteome.
